Protecting Your Mobile From a Cell Phone Virus

A Cell Phone Virus? Is it really possible? Yes, it is. Think of your cell phone in the same terms as you think of your computer. If your cell phone has the Internet on it and can browse the web and open email attachments and sync with your Outlook and on and on, it really isn’t much different is it? While it is not often ‘publicized’ it is definitely more on the rise as more everyday consumers are starting to migrate into the smartphone and PDA marketplace.

It was in the latter part of 2004 when the first cell phone virus was discovered named: “Cabir”. It got into a few Bluetooth handhelds, which at that time were definitely not as popular nor as common as they are today, so needless to say it wasn’t widespread news because it didn’t pose a great public risk. As time passed, the phones that seemed to be affected most were phones that had what they called the Symbian Operating Software system. Every cell phone like every computer essentially has an Operating System, same as if you have Windows on your PC or Mac OS X on your Mac. A lot of Nokia phones use the Symbian OS and so this is why a larger percentage of their handhelds were prone to cell phone virus attacks, but remember, ‘larger percentage’ is relative as the number of viruses is still quite small in relationship to the billions of them out there on the market.

So exactly how does one get a cell phone virus?

1. Much like the same as you get a virus on your computer, from opening ‘no-no’ and unknown email attachments and .MMS files that you don’t recognize.

2. Looking at too much porn, lol. But seriously this happens as well.

3. Leaving Bluetooth setting open and “discoverable”. I know in certain countries where it is forbidden for men and women to speak and congregate and flirt in public places, they keep the Bluetooth setting open if they want to be ‘discovered’ so they can chat, but for the rest of the world, zip it, lock it and throw the key out the window, ok? Keeping your bluetooth setting discoverable, keeps your phone discoverable and susceptible to cell phone viruses, unwanted virtual dialgoue and cyber garbage in general.

4. Where the Vertical Axis Meet: Generation X and Y, cell phone crazy over the top, out of control with your downloading every f.ree game, ringtone, wallpaper, theme that you get from public sites and file sharing. No, no, no, that is a cell phone virus waiting to happen. Use respected and trusted sites. I prefer to use CNET when I am downloading most software.

Cell Phone Virus Symptoms

Like your computer, it totally wigs out to say the least. If you definitely did not drop it in water or do something crazy and you fall into one of the categories above, you could be at risk. There are no common symptons, but sometimes you may experience problems such as the battery won’t recharge or constantly drains, a certain menu options keeps blinking and doesn’t allow you to scroll to other menu options or another screen. Of course these problems can also come with age, other long term recurring abuse and physical damage it could have received, lol, and isolated problems with the phone software in general.

What to Do if I have Problems?

Without hesitation, I would advise you seek professional help :) but in regards to your phone, I would recommend the following:

1. Make sure you always have a copy of your phone book, emails, addresses etc. backed up on your computer or elsewhere. You know if you get a virus you are going to lose everything. Even if you think you are never going to get a virus, you should ALWAYS have a back up your information anyway.

2. When in doubt take the battery out. Attempt to do a soft reset by removing the battery in your cell phone and keeping it out for approximately one minute. Replace the battery, power it on and see if it works.

3. If it doesn’t…you’re pretty much screwed…only kidding. Call customer care and ask for warranty exchange. Tell them you THINK you are having ‘software related issues’ or tell them what your phone is doing or not doing (do not tell them your mobile have contacted a deadly cell phone virus). Listen to their suggestions and see if any of them will work.

4. When you receive the replacement phone, download anti virus software for your cell phone. The larger companies such as Symantec are now offering these as f.ree downloads (as of this writing).

5. Use common sense. Hopefully you have a little bit of that :)

Cell Phone Etiquette: Are You a Cell Phone Sinner? Mobile Mistakes Could Wreck Your Career

In spite of their convenience and necessity, cell phones are now another means whereby we can irritate our fellow man. Theaters, restaurants, trains-even public restrooms-are no longer safe from the possibility of an untimely call. Two weeks ago I even heard someone having a cell conversation in a toilet stall. At that moment I knew that if ever there was a reason for voicemail I had found it.

Somehow cell phone ownership seems to affect common sense. And on a more serious note, poor cell phone etiquette can ruin a career. Are you committing any of the following sins?

Sin 1: Annoying or Cutesy Rings

The cha-cha, the latest pop single, your lover’s voice-I don’t want to hear any of these, and neither does anyone else. Have mercy on the general public when picking a cell phone ring. Your latest Romeo saying, “Ooh, baby, baby” may be funny to your friends, but it’s a credibility wrecker at the office. Believe it or not, that actually happened to a friend of mine. She went to a business meeting and forgot to turn off her ringer. Midway through the meeting, her purse started talking. She had a fancy ring that was a recording of his voice telling her how beautiful she was. Thank goodness he didn’t use her name, so like everyone else, she pretended she didn’t know the source of the mysterious voice.

Sin 2: Holding Court

“We just landed, and I’m waiting to get off the plane.” I must hear that from at least four or five people every time I take a flight. In the midst of all the benign information that follows, what these rude cell phone users don’t say is, “There is a short, homicidal looking woman standing next to me. I can tell that she is getting ready to beat me senseless for talking loudly about nothing on my phone.” People, please: if there is nowhere for the rest of us to go, think about whether you really need to have that conversation.

Sin 3: We Can Hear You

For whatever reason, many people talk at top volume when they are on a cell phone. Microphones are sensitive. The person you are calling can hear you. We don’t need to. Enough said.

Sin 4: Your Help Is Ruining My Conversation

In the last few months, I have seen signs in fast-food restaurants and retail stores that say something to the effect: “We will gladly help you when you are done with your cell phone call.” It doesn’t surprise me. Many times I have watched people talk on phones while in line (see Sin 2) and then not even address or acknowledge the employees whose assistance they need. Simple courtesy will go a long way toward getting you on your way.

Sin 5: Taking a Call When in a Meeting

As the old saying goes, just because something can be done doesn’t mean that it should be done. Whether you have called it yourself or are merely attending at someone’s request, invitation, or order, a scheduled meeting is not the time for cell phone calls. The rings alone are intrusive; answering them is an even worse breach of etiquette. The message received by those at the meeting is that they are less important than the disembodied voice coming through the cell. Unless your intention is to make others feel insignificant (definitely not a cool move if your boss is waiting for you to get off the phone), then don’t answer, turn it off, and get it out of sight.

Sin 6: Are You Talking to Me?

With the invention of hand-free cell phones came the double-edged sword of convenience and mistaken identity. Who among us has not been taken aback by the presence of another human trawling the aisles of Wal-Mart while actively engaged in what, on initial inspection, would seem to be an animated discussion with himself or herself? After giving this person, who is clearly having a psychotic episode, a wide berth, we realize there is actually a streamlined headset attached to the person’s skull yet well hidden underneath a hat. At the risk of being mistaken for a pop singer or air traffic controller who has wandered away from work, leave the headset in the car.

Sin 7: Too Much Information

Discussing anything of a private nature that others within earshot might be able to hear is unwise on a number of counts. Think about it: do you want your coworkers to know the results of your latest lab tests your doctor’s office has just called to share with you? or see your “dark side” when your contractor calls to tell you his work will take two months longer and $2,000 more than he had originally stated? or hear your travel agent has booked you on that cruise to Nassau for the same week you’d requested to have off for surgery you so desperately needed? Unless you want to raise a lot of questions and eyebrows, take calls from those who probably have unpleasant, upsetting, or incriminating information when you have total privacy.

On a very serious note, too much information given over a cell phone while others are in your presence could cost you dearly. A friend recently shared with me his experience of standing behind a woman talking on her cell to a repairman who was coming to her home to do some work while she wasn’t going to be there. By the end of the call, my friend had learned the woman’s name, address, neighborhood (complete with directions on how to get there), and the location of the spare key she had left for the repairman to gain entry to her house. Had he been so inclined, he could have reached the woman’s place before the repairman and cleaned her out–or worse.

Go forth, and sin no more. These tips just might save you your credibility, image, job, belongings–even your life.

Safe Cell Phone Use For Teens – Questions to Ask Before Purchasing a Mobile Phone

All I wanted when I was 12 was the newest Barbie Doll outfit. My 12-year-old daughter has recently been pleading for her first wireless phone. Her sales pitch is that it will “make her safer.” After mulling this over for days, I began to look at the safety aspects of making this investment.

The most practical part of buying a cell phone for my teen was her ability to contact me in case of an emergency. This does not include running out of cash at The Fashion Barn. This safety measure allows me to give her more freedom, within our set family rules, and assures me that she can phone me at any time, for any reason.

But several questions remained. We need to talk about use of her mobile device at school. Many schools now have strict policies on the use of cell phones on campus. Ringing cell phones are a disruption during class and texting teens are probably not paying much attention to the English lesson.

Who was going to pay for the mobile phone? Would my daughter use allowance money or money earned babysitting and her new summertime job? We all know mobile phone use can get quite costly if it is not monitored often. How was the cell phone going to be used? I know that mobile phones are now utilized for harassing fellow classmates, cheating on tests and planning the overthrow of small third-world governments.

Should I ask her to use the cell phone only for emergencies or place a limit on the friends she can call? One of the merits of getting her the cell phone was my ability to track her whereabouts using the GPS feature on the phone. So now when she calls me to tell me she is at home, I can actually check from work to see that she has arrived safely.

A big trepidation I had was text messaging. I have heard all about about the explicit text messages that teens are sending and receiving. I was sure an adult conversation would be needed to explain to her why this behavior would not be acceptable. A study found that one in five teens had sent or posted a naked picture of themselves. My daughter would need a reminder that these photos will remain forever and possibly come back to haunt her in a college school application or future job search unless she plans on a “Girls Gone Wild” career.

After listening to numerous educators, kids and parents, The Wireless Foundation, CTIA – The Wireless Association and its members have developed the “Be Smart. Be Fair. Be Safe: Responsible Wireless Use” campaign (http://www.besmartwireless.com). They offer valuable tips to help parents begin start a conversation with their kids about mobile phone use.

Since this was a fairly big investment, I want to make sure her cell phone is protected from damage. We all remember how her camera ended up in the bathtub. After a fast online search, we found a cute and cuddly cell phone cover in the shape of a Dalmatian dog (just like our family pet). My daughter was able to attach the plush cell phone accessory to her jeans using the heavy duty key-clip. Now her cell phone is safe from drops and dings and will hopefully last awhile. At least until the conversation about boys occurs.

How to Use Cell Phone Number Reverse Lookup Directories to Find Details of Mobile Phone Owners

Are you looking for how you can easily conduct a cell phone number reverse lookup search? There are so many people who are looking for the same information as you. Cell phone number reverse lookup is a way of checking up personal information that is attached to a cell phone number. Cell phone numbers are not like land lines that you can find information about on white pages and yellow pages on the internet. Cell phones are more personal and so information on it are kept as confidential as possible except in cases where they are used as business phones.

With mobile phone reverse lookup, you will be able to view this confidential information on who is the owner of a cell phone, the address of the cell phone owner, and other information that are held on file such as email addresses and so on. You will not be able to find this in free phone listings or volunteer pages; you will have to find them somewhere else that is not so public.

Therefore, if you want to use a mobile telephone number to find the details of the owner of such number, you will have to make use of the reverse cell phone lookup directories and this will mean you will part with some kind of service charges which is usually in the range of $20-$30 with which you will secure a membership pass into the huge database of mobile phone numbers.

After you have obtained a membership, you can search with a valid mobile phone number and you will be able to access information on any mobile phone number. Most of these services don’t only give you the names and addresses of the cell phone number owners, some of them give you the history of the phone number. If it has been used by someone before and passed to another person, or maybe there is a family story around the number.

Besides, you will have a customer service personnel all to yourself the whole day should you run into any kind of trouble while trying to make your search. It is recommended you use the paid services since the free ones are not a guarantee. The paid ones do their home work on these numbers and the information you get is what you will get when you hire a personal investigator to help you do a research on a number. The free sites are only giving you what they have which is always shallow when it comes to details.

However, there are so many reverse phone look up directories on the internet but not all of these services are good. The service I use and recommend is Reverse Phone Detective. Reverse phone detective will let you conduct a reverse cell phone lookup search for as little as $20 and they will give you a 60 days more back guarantee which means you can get 100% of your money back within 60 days of signing up if you are not satisfied with their service for whatever reason(s). New Cell Phones, Latest Mobile Phone

Don’t Be Fooled When You Shop For New Cell Phones. When You Buy The Latest Mobile Phone, Make Sure It’s Really New.

So you’re thinking of buying the latest mobile phone and your friend says “Why not get a used cell phone? It’s cheaper and just as good!” Now that isn’t quite accurate. It may be true that you can get a fairly new second-hand cell phone at a cheaper price, but the question remains, why would you want to?

In the past, new cell phones used to be much more expensive and it was probably better to get a used mobile phone because of the price. But these days, it’s quite different. New cell phones are more reasonably priced and they come with great cell phone plans that you don’t want to miss out on. Obviously, you won’t be able to enjoy these offers when you buy a used phone.

It’s also true that you can still get some of the latest mobile phones when you buy them second-hand. But why would you want to buy a reconditioned phone? It may look like a new cell phone but you wouldn’t know if it has ever been broken or if any of its parts have been removed or replaced. If you’re shopping for the newest cell phones in the market, then you might as well get a brand new phone. The only reason you might want to get a used phone is because the mobile phone model that you’re interested in is either out-of-date or out of stock.

Honestly, if you’re looking to buy a new cell phone, then you might as well head to the store and get the latest mobile phone on offer. At the very least, you know that it’s new out of the box, and there is a negligible risk of your new cell phone breaking down for no apparent reason.

Mobile Cell Phone History – Wireless Communications

Children today consider wireless phones as necessary and usual in daily life. They don’t know a time without them being prevalent. But that was not the case in 1973 when Martin Cooper made his first cellular phone call from a New York City street and New Yorkers stared gaping at him. But the history of cell phone starts further back in time.

The history of cell phones or wireless communications must start with Samuel Morse. He introduced the concept of wireless by conduction when he transmitted a telegraph signal through water. His telegraph was the first device to transmit messages by electricity.

Then in 1843 a man by the name of Michael Faraday studied to see if space could conduct electricity. In 1865 a dentist, Dr. Mahlon Loomis was the first person to communicate through wireless via the atmosphere. He came up with the idea of transmitting and receiving messages using the atmosphere as a conductor and sending up kites covered with copper screens that were linked to the ground with copper wires. Loomis was awarded a $50,000 research grant by congress.

But let us move forward to the twentieth century and the invention of the cell or wireless phone as we know it today. This brings us to a man often referred to as the father of the cell phone, Martin Cooper. He was employed by Motorola and worked on developing the first hand held radios made for the Chicago police department in 1967. He then went on to lead Motorola’s cellular research.

AT&T’s, Bell Laboratories introduced the idea of cellular communication in 1947. Through the 60′ and 70′s Motorola and Bell Laboratories were in a race to incorporate the technology into portable devices.

On April 3, 1973 Martin Cooper won the race when he placed the first cell phone call to his rival at AT&T. Motorola introduced the 16-ounce “DynaTAC” phone into commercial service in 1983, at a cost to the consumer of $3,500. It weighed 2.5 lbs. took 10 hours to charge with 35 minutes of talk time. Features were limited to dial, listen and talk. This was commonly referred to as the Brick.

In 1977 cell phones went public. Chicago was the first city to trial cell phones with 2000 customers.

In 1983 Motorola, with the help of Martin Cooper, introduced the 16-ounce “DynaTAC” the first truly portable cellular phone. This phone took 15 years and a cost of over 100 million dollars to come to market. The cost to the consumer was $3500. It weighed 2.5 lbs., took 10 hours to charge and allowed 35 minutes of talk time. Features were limited to dial, listen and talk.

From 1983 to the late 1980″s 1st generation cellular or car phones as they were often called became very popular. Most were not hand held but rather installed in cars or bag phones.

In 1988 the CTIA (Cellular Technology Industry Association) was founded.

In the early 1990′s second generation or 2G phones came onto the market. They were able to work on GSM, TDMA, and CDMA technology. 2G digital networks were online and replacing the analog network frequencies making them virtually obsolete. The phones became much smaller and portable and usage soared.

Currently third generation or 3G phones are the technology available today. 3G phones include innovations that allow them to receive more than just phone calls. For example Internet access and email capability and streaming video.

In December 2005 the wireless industry in the US surpassed the 200 million subscriber mark. In 2006 that number grew to 233 million subscribers with 12.8% of households being totally wireless. There are 195,613 cell sites making this possible.
